Firstly, Hi to everyone. I am no expert but have considerable knowledge, but this problem is really bugging me. Bear with me.
A friend brought the Acer 1640 to me as he was having problems. He had installed another copy of windows XP hoping he would solve the problem, so it now had 2 different versions of XP installed but with the new install his keyboard and mouse were intermitently working. I decided the easiest option was to start from scratch and install fresh, so deleted all the partitions and tried to install XP pro SP2. It took 3 attempts as when I got to the serial, I had no keybpoard. So I had to pull the plug and start again.
Eventually it went on and ran OK for a short while and would let you do most things, but then the keyboard and touchpad stop working. Then I tried to look at device manager to see what drivers were needed and it wouldnt let me access it. It wouldnt let me run combifix or similar programs It would also not allow me to shut down. So it was pull battery and power out and let it reboot. Same problem everytime.
Now if I boot in safe mode, it appears to run perfectly.
So, I make the presumption that it has pulled a driver from the windows install CD that it does not like. I have tried updating the drivers with the acer ones, but again in normal windows mode, it has its problems.
Long winded, but can anyone assist in a way to find out what the bad boy is thats causing the problems. Is there a way of logging what is happening when I boot. Is it a memory virus or is this a hardware fault that has developed.
Any guidance would be appreciated.
Regards
Dave
