acer aspire one help

hello all i have a friends laptop and it is not working any help is greatly appreciated. Upon startup it goes to a screen that says:

Windows could not start because the folowing file is missing or corrupt:

\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup usint the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

i am confused because this laptop has no CD-Rom drive. it is an Acer Aspire One running windows xp and an intel atom processor. thanks for helping in advance.
