Acer Aspire One Memory-Questions

This is the Acer Aspire One D255E-13111 Netbook

CPU-Intel Atom N455(1.6Hz,512 KB-Cache
Memory- 1GB DDR3 Memory
Storage- 250 GB HDD

I click Task Manager and here are the numbers.
Physical Memory(MB)-Total 1013 Cached-385
Available-525 Free-163
Kernal Memory(MB) Paged 72 Nonpaged 60
Processes- 64 Physical Memory: 47%

My wife only uses this for using Facebook and sending a few emails. I can't tell from these numbers if she is short memory or not. When I click on my desktop's Task Manager the numbers I get are easier to understand. Just clicked on my Task Manager and my numbers for Physical Memory(K) is Total-982512 Available-288148 System Cache-467440 My computer also has 1GB Memory but only a 80GB HD. Anyone tell me about her numbers and what they mean? Thanks for the help!

Memory can refer to either RAM or hard drive capacity (usually RAM). 250GB/80GB is your hard drive capacity, which dictates how much data can be stored on your computer. 80GB is about as low as you want to go these days, but is fine for most people who don't have huge music collections or don't download videos. For reference, your typical song is 4MB (about 250 songs per GB), and a feature length video could run anywhere from 500MB to 4GB depending on quality.

Hard drive capacity only really has an effect on your computer's performance if you're maxing it out. If you go to My Computer and right click your C: drive and hit properties, you can see how much of your hard drive your using. If you're not getting close to filling it up, you're just fine.

RAM on the other hand can have a pretty be effect on system performance. RAM has to do with storing data that is currently being utilized by your system (i.e. a running program). These days 1GB is the lowest you'll see on a newer computer, and 2GB would be the recommended minimum. Both of your computers could definitely benefit from a RAM upgrade.

Same question about the Acer Netbook. I open task manager and it says:Physical Memory-Total-1013 Cached-307 Available-306 Free-24(This goes to 0(zero)sometimes).
Kernel Memory-Paged-68 Nonpaged-52 The physical bar reads 83%. Now this is a new Aspire One-D255E Netbook CPU-1.66Hz,512B cache Memory-1GB DDR3 Storage-250 GB HDD . I checked and it says capacity 219GB and 209 free.

The Aspire One comes with Netflix,New York Times,Ebay, already installed on it and my wife never uses them. The only thing and I mean the only thing my wifes uses this for is for Facebook. I can't believe only using Facebook that this netbook would be low on memory right out of the box.

If she were to download songs and stuff like that, that would make sense she would be using more memory but she's not. We thought this netbook would be perfect for what she would be using it for. So can you tell by the numbers that I have given you that she is indeed low on memory? Should I buy a 2GB memory stick and upgrade it or will that ruin the warranty?

My desktop computer has the same memory(1GB)but I got ITunes,WMP and both of these are loaded with songs and I also have many photos stored and don't have any problems with it.Also my computer only has the 80GB HD. Many thanks for your input!

a 2GB RAM stick would help, but its normal for windows 7 to use .5 Gb or more out of the box. That wont hurt the ussage. The HDD is what is important to downloads and such, not the ram.

upgrade will always make the system faster (even if its 0.01%) the 2GB ram will help you a lot in this case though and also the HD well i have high idea of it being 5400RPM which is slowest that you can get (to keep the heat and power usage down) but upgrading it will help you too.

though for facebook i'll say best is to get SSD and stay with 1GB ram, as SSD will improve the time she spent turning it on and using it and will also increase battery life by lot in this case as other components uses lot less too as it lasts like 9 hour or so...

solid state drive. its basically a sata large capasity flash drive. way faster than a HDD and uses less power too.
