Acer Desktop (Vista) can't connect to internet

I have an Acer Aspire M1100 running 32bit Vista that won't connect to the internet (via Ethernet). I've been searching around for solutions and nothing has worked so far (i.e. none of these have worked). I have the latest LAN driver from the Acer website.

It appears to recognize it. I just used the same Ethernet cable on my laptop and it works fine. In Network and Sharing Center I can see that it just tries to connect to an "Unidentified network" and then fails to do so.

Is this network onboard? I would try a pci network card... then get the drivers for it and see if that works,,

It's onboard but I don't have a spare network card. I would consider buying a new one but only as a last resort once we've tried any other possible solutions.

Ok. Are you getting a valid ip address? It will probably look like 192.168.1.xxx. If your address is like 169.254.x.x then you are getting a private IP address from Windows.

If you are getting an address that looks like the second, then your router's DHCP service isn't working. You can either connect to your router and fix it, or assign a static IP in the correct range to get things working.

But if it looks like the first, then something else is wrong. If this is the case, do other devices connected to your router work?

I'm getting an "Autoconfiguration IPv4 address" that looks like 169.254.x.x. I've tried changing the IP address and using a static IP address but it still doesn't work... perhaps that IP address I'm using is in use by another device but I'm trying a bunch of numbers from 1-254 for the last section of the IP and non seem to be working. I may also be entering the wrong address for the Preferred DNS server though, am I supposed to enter the address of my router here?

I have a lot of other devices that connect to the router just fine (blackberry, laptop, desktops). When I look at my router settings I can see that the DHCP server is enabled.

We'll have to figure out what's wrong with your routers DHCP server then. Since your desktop is almost certainly configured correctly (or it wouldn't get the private IP). The easiest thing to try first is rebooting the router. If that doesn't work, some consumer routers only have a limited number of IPs they'll dish out at a given time. You may be able to increase the number of clients in the routers configs. If not, a static IP will work, assuming you give yourself a correct IP/mask/gateway.

OK, lets do this..reconnect your laptop and go into your network connections and find out what your laptops IP address is. Report back here what you find out. It should be a 192.168 number. And I will help you to setup your computers IP address manually.

Sounds like your IP is in the right range then. What happens if you try to ping 74.125.226.145 (or some other non-local internet address)

My internet is working, network lock was enabled on Avast (network lock blocks all in/out connection). I can't believe I didn't even check avast! I feel like an idiot now! D: Although I have to be honest, I wasn't the one that enabled network lock (didn't even know avast had a feature like that) so it never crossed my mind that it was the problem... thanks for all responses though really appreciated!
