Ack! Another in a Series of Slowness

This is I, posting yet again due to slowness. Once upon a time (to be exact, Jan. 1,) I decided to convert my FAT32 volume to NTFS. I converted using the WinXP supplied "convert." It was automatically set to convert when system restarts. I went to bed. The next day, the convert appears to be done because the computer was at the Welcome Screen waiting for me to type my passwords. I typed it in, and it took quite a while before NAV and ZAP loaded. ZAV for some reason lost all the information it had about all the programs that ever tried to connect to the Internet, and it was asking me stupid questions that I've already answered again. Spybot S&D's TeaTimer.exe didn't even appear in the tray--nor did the volume control icon--though I know that it is running in the background.

So I restarted my computer.

The passing of the Logo screen (where blue indicators rolls to the right) was extremely fast! However, there is a 9 seconds black screen and a 4 seconds "Windows is starting up" before the Welcome Screen appeared--which didn't happen before the convert: it always went from the logo screen directly (after about 0.5 seconds) to the welcome screen. Nope, the restart didn't work. Spybot TeaTimer.exe didn't show again on the tray, nor did the volume control. And ZAP and NAV took forever (actually, 2 minutes) to load.

Any ideas why this is? Any simple one-liner responses would be greatly appreciated!

(PS: running NAV 2005, ZAP latest version, WinXP SP2)

I would recommend reinstalling those programs Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm Pro are two programs that interact directly with the file system and since you just coverted from FAT to NTFS, they might not work properly. Now that your file system is NTFS, reinstall NAV and ZAP ..the same goes with the other programs you are having trouble with. First things first, remove and then reinstall them.

Thanks for the reply. I did that. It is slightly faster now; however, the tray icons that are supposed to be there are still not appearing in the tray. (Spybot S&D [reinstalled] Resident [teatimer.exe], and volume control.)

Can anyone help me with that problem?

Thanks!!

You are most likely have some problems in your registry. I have Norton System Works which comes with Norton WinDoctor... which quickly fixes problems in my registry. There are a variety of freeware and shareware programs that might be able to fix any problems you are having in your registry. Also: run --> msconfig.. will let you see what loads everytime you start windows... The programs that you are unable to see in the taskbar might not be enabled in msconfig.
