Active X Controls- A Question

I hope i'm in the right forum. My computer crashed big time and instead of taking it to a repair shop I wanted to try and do a clean install of Windows XP. Well to my surprise I actually did it and now my computer is up and running very well. I'm trying to figure out what the problem was that made my computer crash. I was reading an article about Active X controls and i'm a little confused. From the article I read it says to stay away from them if you can. It said to forget IE7 and use Opera or Firefox browser. Your opinions? Thanks!

Ok, firstly as a general rule of thumb it is good to avoid installing Active X controlers from unknown or sites that dont need one. Like if your on a microsoft website and it wants to install on it *should* be safe enough. Basicly only install them if its a very trusted website installing it for a REASON! If your on a site and an install prompt pops up even though your just reading text on the site...please dont install it. This is when problems occur.

As for the brower dispute its a big one. Personaly i love firefox, as do many, many other people around the world. However there are those who swear my Opera and others that actually like IE. Its hard to say if there is a 'best' one, but firefox has always worked for me.

The security settings in IE 7 by default will state "never download unsafe active x controls" with the default settings. This is why you will see prompts asking if you wish to install whatever active x is seen on a particular site like Seth was pointing out there.Too often however you will run into seeing small white boxes with a red x in one corner if you lack a certain degree of needed active x for that and other similar sites like right here.

Besides active x controls you will also run into the need for Java runtime in order to have online media seen in various sites(often ads) run. For that you simply go to SUN's own download site seen at http://www.java.com/en/ The page there is for the Windows version of runtime.
