Adding a "serial port" to newer maching

I have an old Plotter that I need to continue to use. When I use a USB-to-serial adapter, I have to reboot the PC and restart the Plotter between each job or it just goes berzerk (wasting time and paper/vinyl in the process).

Can I add a PCI serial-rs232 card to a new PC, and it work like an old Serial Port? It seems like it will certainly add the right ports, but will they actually be software compatible like my old PC is, not crazy like the USB adapter.

Thanks!

im curious about why a 9 pin serial port. only person i think of that needs it today is a engineer / electronic and related to older model PLC's in industry. Not uncommon. its a must have.

lot of shops still use it today. i get called often enough for industry and small shops.
Only company i know that has them today built into it is a dedicated Dell with serial port.
interesting though.

sorry i read it again. you would be better off with dedicated. i might work.
PLC's it wont. requires the card.
