Adding Different Ram

I only have 2 ram slots on a Gateway 500xp running windows xp sp2, currently 2x256. I want to replace one 256 with a gig and run 1.25gb ram. I have a kingston pc2700 now along with the stock gateway 256, but I thought I could use 3200 also. A local store has a gig stick of PNY 3200 on sale for $69. Can I run this with the kingston in there now?
 
Would it be bad to do that? I mean, for $70 a gig, its hard to pass up. Is PNY recommended? So I would have 1 gig PNY and 256 Kingston? Anyone see any problems with that?
 
It's not ideal but it's not bad either. On the off chance that the RAM doesn't play nicely together you can just get rid of both 256MB sticks, 1GB is a lot of RAM for most people.
