Adding more RAM

I have been reading the different topics and I don't seem to find the answer to my question... I have a Sony VAOIS PCV RX560... It has two slots for RAM. It came with 256 of RAM and I want to add more. My reason for adding is I want to do some minor video editing and I'm thinking the upgrade will speed up my computer. Am I thinking correctly?...Now my question, what I have read says that the max RAM for my computer is 512MB. Why is it max and what would I have to change to increase the RAM if needed? Also can I use a different brand of memory than what is in it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, it's the maximum amount of RAM because that's all the motherboard will accept. There is no was of increasing this max limit unless you get a different motherboard. If you install 1GB, it either A) won't work, or B) will only recognize 512MB of it.

Adding more RAM should improve video editing performance, no doubts there. Just make sure that the rest of your hardware is not the bottleneck.
EX: You have a 1GHz processor and 256MB of RAM and want to video edit, so you upgrade to 512MB RAM. Well, the 512MB might improve performance a bit, but upgrading the processor will have a larger boost in perofrmance.

With a Sony, using a different brand of memory isn't "recommended." But I've heard of people using other brands besides what Sony sells and it working, so you can give it a shot. If you jsut want to play it safe, go with what Sony sells if you can afford it. But i odn't think it's absolutely necessary.

i dont think that 512 is quite enough for serious video editing. it might be worth upgrading the processor. 1ghz is pretty average

actually i think the processor is 1.7ghz...but that doesn't matter much. A 1.7 ghz processor isn't gonna get you far with video editing. And the ram is pretty outdated, its sdram. What's your budget for this upgrade and how much video editing are you gonna do?

My budget isn't to tight and just some personal editing of family and races.

Added my new RAM today and it works great. Although I have not done any video editing I am pleased with the increase in speed everywhere else. I went with 256 PC133 SDRAM
