adding ram and pc hangs

running windows 7, 64 bit. using gigabyte MA790X-UD4 mobo, phenom x4 9750 cpu, dual 4850x2 gpus and origionally had a kingston hyperx 4gb ram kit (2x2gb) KHX8500D2K2/4G. i just went back to the same store i purchased that ram from and bought an identical kit to increase my ram to 8gb. pc posts fine then hangs when loading windows. running the system repair utility also hangs when looking for problems. memtest also hangs at about 10% total. removing the ram and the pc boots into win7 fine.

have i bought dodgy ram? or are the slots stuffed? i blew them out with compressed air (tinned) so shouldnt of been dirty or anything. or do i need to change anything in the bios? like turning dual channel on/off? i generally avoid playing with bios as i've killed pcs in the past that way... so if i need to tweak anything there please walk me through it lol :)

The default for that memory is DDR2 800 at 5/5/5/15 with 1.8 voltage. To get it to run at 1066 it needs 2.2V. A Phenom I didnt really like running 4 sticks at 1066, but it was really more of a stock voltage thing.

Look in your bios and see what speed/timing and voltage its got it set to.

try the new kit without the original one in. It does indeed sound like you have faulty kit. i've experienced faulty memory as well, along with faulty memory slots.

I would try one memory stick at a time to determine the faulty one. eg: run memtest with each stick individually.

Your board supports up to 16gb of memory so too much memory isn't the problem.

thanks for the speedy replies and help guys, most appreciated. always scared to post on forums and only do so for help as a last resort because folks tend to flame you down for being a noob... looks like this place actually has some decent folk around :)

@stranglehold
yeah, i forgot i have increased the voltage to run my origional 4gb at 1066. i'll try setting that back and re-installing the other and see if that works. i'll be dissapointed if thats it and i cant run at 1066, it was my (very limited) understanding that particular ram would happily churn along at that voltage etc without a problem :( i've never touched any settings for timing - should i? i'm a bit of a overclocking noob, setting my ram voltage up a notch is the first and only time i've ever tried something other than factory defaults.

@linkin93
i'll try with just the new kit in and see what happens and get back to y'all. tho i'm starting to think its probably this voltage thing stranglehold brought to my attention.

ok... i think its all working, tho i'm not sure how lol.

when i first installed the origional kit it defaulted to 1.8v at 800. i bought that particular memory because i was told it would run best at 1066 so i tweaked the voltage up a notch to 2.2v and it's run fine since. at least until i added the extra two sticks. so on stranglehold's advice i went into the bios and set back to 1.8v manually. then decided to just skip using manual settings at all and just select default. so i select auto and it jumps BACK up to 2.2v and 1066. exactly where i had it set manually. i decided to see what happens so saved, shutdown and installed the other ram. and now all works fine.

so, changing from a manual setting of 2.2v to the auto setting ALSO of 2.2v fixed my problem... all still running at 1066.
