adding RAM

laptop spec.:
compaq presario cq40
OS: vista premium sp2

I have my current RAM which is ddr2 800 1G and the brand is kingston. I want to add another 1, somewhat like another 2G. Is it okay if the other brand of the RAM that will be added is not the same with current one? If not, why?

Essentially any RAM should work in that laptop. Most laptop's today aren't all that picky. As long as it's some form of DDR2, preferably close to the original speed (I'm guessing DDR2-533) you should be fine.

Two things to consider though... You'll probably need two sticks seeing as many computers came with dual-channel. I've seen some recent machines come with single 2GB sticks, but I doubt you'll be so lucky... Also, I'd confirm wherever you get it has a good return policy and/or the RAM is by some brand that carries a lifetime warranty. Most do, but it's something to keep in mind.

What do you mean?

Yah, about the warranty. My country don't have that lifetime warranties so boohoo! Only 1-2yrs. of warranty.

I may be wrong, but I think what the other one was getting at was that your laptop may have 2 slots for ram and you will have to buy memory that runs with dual channel like 2x1gb sticks of ram vs. buying just one 2gb stick of ram.

is your laptop running 1gb stick or does it have 2 slots for ram and is running 2x512mb sticks for a total of 1gb. Also do you how many slots for ram do you have?

The memory stick is just one 1G.
I don't know how many slots my laptop have. Is there any other way I can know how many slots my motherboard have other than opening the back side of my laptop?

waw! thanks for the info. thanks.
so, to make things clear and done:
so brands on RAM's don't matter as long as they have the same required frequency of the laptop. right?

Well, you always want to try and stay with the same brand and timings of ram you currently have as having different brands and timings can cause issues.

Now days Rams are a very helpful to run the programs fast. It depends about what type of ram? and how many capacity of Ram you are using.
