Admin Privilages in Ubuntu 6.06LTS ?

I'm the only user in my fresh install of Ubuntu 6.06LTS.. but for some reason I don't have the ability to install anything fully or edit anything in the etc folder.

Anyone know how to obtain admin privilages or disable this feature so I have full access to 6.06LTS?

I always get this 'You don't have proper permissions to do this', not in those exact words, though.

Any help is greatly appreciated :)
 
you need root privileges to do this.

if you wanted to edit the fstab file or the http.conf file you would do so like this via terminal

sudo pico /etc/fstab

sudo pico /etc/http/http.conf

It will prompt you for your password, enter it and then you can edit it right in the terminal. If you want to edit it in a GUI based application substitute pico for your favorite text editor. Please also make back up files of your configuration files incase you botch it you can always restore a back up.
 
I'm unsure how to do that..?

I'd like to edit '/etc/modprobe.d/aliases'

I'm fairly new to linux, but learn quick.. again, any help is appreciated :)
 
you could also do (in terminal)
sudo passwd root -->then follow the instuctions,
you wont be able to log in as root but you will have the rights to do admin tasks
 
open up the terminal (or console - whatever they call it in your distro) which brings up the command line.

to edit the file in terminal you can do this:

sudo pico /etc/modprobe.d/aliases

That way you can edit it right there in the terminal.
 
Personally I prefer gedit, so give that a try as well.

Applications -> Accessories-> Terminal

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/aliases
