Advanced laptop/desktop question (I think)

Alright im about to do an awful job at explaining what i want to do so bear with me.

My boss at work has his corporate laptop set up in a way that when he comes to our store he can logon to the network and access his office pc through the network miles away. Its not a simple file sharing setup though, he actually boots up his laptop as his desktop then it can be synced to his desktop when he gets back to his office.

I assume this requires the desktop to be used as a server of sorts but does anyone know how to do this because it would be really cool to do i think.

It's called cloud computing, and many third party services already offer this, especially google.

What is googles software called to do it? im doing some research but i found one that requires an apple laptop but im looking to set this up with the hardware i already have if possible.

Well Google docs will synchronize all documents from multiple computers over the internet. I mean you could accomplish all of this with two products. Dropbox and Logmein.

What is it exactly you are trying to do?
