Advice for a "sweet spot" build

No, get the X2 3800+ is possible instead of the single core version, than you could "stave off the obsolescence", you could've just said i want it to last long. Lol. I know stave is a word, buut what about obsolescence?

How is $4709 overpaying for all of that? Is it b/c in Canada the stuff is cheaper?
Well for starters, Newegg is expensive. And ... yes. (well you can buy stuff from comp shows in the states too)

Nice reading guys...
Yeah a few of them never managed to quite get reading down pat.

Exactly how are you better off? AMD beats the @)*$# out of intel at everything except multitasking and encoding. He said he might get into video editing, not as a profession, so the difference won't exactly be noticeable to him.
By being more affordable.

AMD is the way to go. Not intel...
I not gone through the rest of this thread but if i see another fanboy comment from you ... you might get promoted. Not in the way you want though. Consider that a formal warning.

okay about the intel vs. amd thing

amd is generally considered to be better for gaming and cheaper

intel is generally considered to be better for video editing/encoding

but you won't see a HUGE difference if you compare one AMD processor to a similar intel processor

i would choose whichever is better priced like praetor is implying :)

your prob gonna want a pretty good vid card, you dont need top of the line, but the pentium d will be excellent for you and lots and lots of memory...like 4 gigs of it. this will help when u start working on those huge tiff files.....def check out newegg for the mobo.

check this mobo out...although not positive on the supporting of pentium d on this one. some one help me out with that part ;)

If you go AMD or Intel Get a duel core. The Duel core will help you to multi task like you said you do. 2gb of ram isn't overkill but you probly not going to need any more then that. You can look around www.newegg.com www.frozencpu.com www.zipzoomfly.com or some other ones. Also www.pricewatch.com will tell you how good of a deal your getting on parts. I would def say you want to go duel core. for a mother board Asus or abit or msi are all really good companys.

If you still want a AMD(I'm a fanboy so i suggest it haha, but I have no reason to back it up so....) then i would suggest an AMD64 X2 of some sort, iuts a dual core and would prabally be better for what your doing.
