Advice for buying a new gaming PC on a budget

Hello interwebs!

So my laptop of about 2 years now just isn't quite cutting it for games, and Ive also discovered with this particular line of HP computer, it's motherboard has a habit of going out after awhile. To err on the safe side, I think its high time I put the research and started formulating a plan to get a new computer. The problem? I'm new to gaming and I have no idea what kind/brand of computer I should buy to meet my needs, especially since I am on a budget, being a poor college kid.
My boyfriend has his own rig that he built himself and he recommends I have atleast an i5 processor equivalent or higher for the games I like to play.

So, I feel the max budget I can look in is around $700, however, the closer I can stay to $500 the happier I will be. I understand that for my needs I will be towards the higher end of my budget, and stronger consideration will be given to computers within that budget than suggestions that are made outside of the budget.

Please also note the only thing I am missing other than the actual computer is a keyboard. I already have a monitor and mouse that I could use with my new rig, so those do not need to be factored into the budget.

I play mostly online MMO's like Final Fantasy. I also have a taste for high graphics demanding games like skyrim. I'd like to be able to run these kinds of games with medium graphics or better.

I will admit with the problems my family has had out of HP computers, I am a little soured on the HP brand.

I'm open to any suggestions and tips/advice. I just want to be able to enjoy my games on a quality PC as well as do schoolwork on.

Try building your rig around an i5 and gtx 960 gpu combo. That will be fine for ff and skyrim on a 500 to 700 budget. You could probably play them at high settings too rather than medium at 1080p.

What's your monitor? If I get a chance later I'll try and put a couple builds together between 5 and 700

Edit. I forgot to ask are you planning on building this yourself or getting it ready built?

I assume he can build it for you? Is your budget for component only?

I'd get your man to spec out a system for you since he's familiar with building them.

Could be one of those 'together' type of projects lol.

I would prefer a prebuilt computer since I attend school separate from him and don't get to see him very often. He's also only ever done it once and had a bunch of help from one of our more tech savvy friends, so he's not exactly confident in doing it without her help.
