Advice needed-Wanna Buy a laptop

I wanna buy a laptop but I don't know much about computers.:confused:
1-I'm a student in university........the laptop will be for my personal use. Put some notes in it, use internet, watch DVDs, listen to music.etc
2-I'm not crazy about the most advanced technology But I should not be stuck with it that after a year I have to buy another better computer.
3-I wanna spend about 500-600 USD.If less that'll be good.
 
Are these points good to look for when buying laptop.plz comment and suggest any good computer which meet these minimum requirements.
Processor :Intel Dual core 2 -7000series
Speed :1.5 Ghz
RAM : 1GB
Hard Disk : 160 GB
graphic card with a resolution of 1280x800
Screen : 15"
