Advice on a College Laptop?

I'm looking to upgrade from my current laptop, which isn't that old but is glitchy and runs hot constantly to the point where I can't take it anymore. here's its specs for reference:
HP Pavilion dv4
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T5800
3 GB RAM
not sure how you check this but seems ~250 GB Hard Drive
Vista

What I Need:
-Aside from normal college notetaking, I will be debating in college. I don't think this takes up too much memory, it's just a lot of word documents, but what I need is a reliable computer that won't crash in round that is portable with a good to very good battery life. Not netbook-size portable, need to actually be able to read what's on the screen but hopefully lightweight.
-Price range: Computer my dad and I liked the most looking around Fry's today was http://www.frys.com/product/6269670?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG so that's about $700. Less would be reallyy nice but unlikely I'm guessing. Maybe around $800, $1000 at the very outside.
-Hopefully it'll be a decent upgrade from the current computer so I don't feel like I'm wasting money
-No more computers with loud fans that constantly overheat for the rest of my life, please haha
-I probably shouldn't install games since I should be doing other things than gaming in college but I can imagine installing something like Oblivion which already runs acceptably well on this computer. It's more important that I have a reliable computer for debate but would be an extra bonus if I had this option open to me

Oh, and PLEASE let me know if you think it's not worth the cost to upgrade this thing. It really isn't that old, I suppose I could wait awhile to buy a new computer if there's nothing on the market that's a significant upgrade in my price range.

THANK YOU!!!

The Laptop your dad liked is more than enough for your college needs. Good Deal too

Being a college student myself, the things i looked when i first purchased my laptop was something that would not give me problems.

Something I would recommend is 4Gigs of ram, at least a duo core processor, 2 HDs (i used to back everything up), and a long battery life. That all you really need. IMHO

Another thing I wish i got was a tablet laptop (to draw graphs etc.)
MS OneNote is my best friend in my classes. Makes organization a breeze.

My laptop broke last year, and I now use an asus netbook. In my opinion, it is perfect for school. Lasts all day, 8+ hour, strong enough to run all staple programs for school, and not strong enough to play games or do anything to distract you. (Programs I only use on my netbook are Chrome, MS word/OneNote, WMP, AIM, Skype).

Good luck with your college endeavors
