Hi,

(I have read the stickies)

I really want to build my first PC to run WinXP Pro and Red Hat Linux. The basic spec I think would be good is:

AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 4800+
2Gb RAM
256Mb NVidia GeForce 7800GTX
500Gb HD Drive/s
CD & DVD Read/Writer

What I am looking for is a suggestions...
Best Motherboard?
Good looking Case
High Quality PSU
Decent Resolution (1600x1200) Flat Screen
Best Hard Drive Configuration (1x 500Mb or 2x 250Mb)
Ethernet & Wireless cards

I mostly do Graphics applications (2D & 3D) and some gaming - CS, Quake, Doom etc

Thanks

this is gonna sound really stupid but can you download it off a website or is it a type of program that u have to have installed by a disc?

LINUX is NOT like windows xp and yes is a free OS. There is also alot of versions of Linux. I think Linux is more like Unix then windows. I can not really speak about linux, my only encounter was with IP COP a security ver of linux I was using as a firewall. You should investigate Linux, google donloadl inux
or just linux. I myself like windows mainly because I very rarley see linux in the work place or on service calls.

i've never even heard of the program so im kinda of in awe right now. i joined this site so i could get a better feel of computers and all the complications and insights to owning one and operating one.

i'm definitely gonna have to do some research on this program. thanks for the description

All the techs I know that us Linux really like linux. I think it is " roll up your sleeves and get dirty " meaning you can tweak this os, I think you can actually build your own kernel...and build your own OS....still I like windows
I think you should investigate it...it is free, what can you lose , make a dual boot win xp / linux box

i have no idea what a kernal is either... im gonna start a new thread about this Linux system and if you wouldnt mind, i'd like to hold a discussion about it.

(it'll be posted in a second if you're interested)

Would this look like a good system to you?

CASE Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000SWA Silver
CPU Athlon X2 4800+
MBD MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (+SATA +Gigabit LAN +7.1 audio)
RAM Corsair TwinX2048-3200C2
PSU Antec TPII-550 PSU
GFX XFX GeForce 7800GTX (490/1.3)
HDD Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS

Looks achievable for £1550.00

PS> Linux is an operating system, if you like programming for the internet, like me, then it is an awesome. If you don't then... well it's still awesome. Get it, play with it and then decide for yourself :)
