Advice on components for a new build PC

Brandon - if I were you I would just leave it for now. It doesn't do anything you would be that interested in for now. Maybe one day you'll download it, start playing with it - like you do with Windows - and love it, or you'll use it in certain circumstances when it helps - like I do.

Knowledge is best gained by experience...

TractorBoy - I didn't mean to offend, I guessed it was a joke - are you an ITFC fan?

CPU Athlon X2 4800+

RAM Corsair TwinX2048-3200C2
PSU Targon 580W
GFX XFX GeForce 7800GTX (490/1.3)
HDD 2 x Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500KS

do they sell systems that come with the linux OS or can u only do that manually?
yes they do, my parents bought a comp that had linux in it but basically all i could do was play a few games, i had no clue where anything was or wat anything does. I tried changing it to windows but b/c i was little and new little of comps i was trying to install windows office x/  now it just sits there, and no one uses it

o0o is it really that confusing? kinda sounds like me operating a mac for the first time. i was so used to windows that i was like pulling my hair out lol.

Brandon, as we keep saying it is often used by programmers and developers as it has some very cool features in these regards... if you found Mac OSX confusing I would suggest you leave it for now...

you seem very determined to keep me away from this program lol. am i a threat to you if i have the linux program in my possession lol? muhahahaha

It's not for beginners, you sound like a beginner if you've never even heard of Linux, so stay away until you learn a bit more. Not to mention you keep calling it a "program" when it's not one, it is an operating system.

Linux is usually for advanced users, and that goes beyond "knowing" about computers, parts, how to build or overclock, etc. I consider myself pretty knowledgable with computer hardware and the Windows OS's.....but i am CLUELESS when it comes to Linux for the most part.

It's not an easy OS. But once you get to use it and figure out the annoynaces of it...it really has potential. It's not going to be anything like Windows accept for the GUI is similiar, and you can port over alot of Windows apps/programs/drivers if you know how.

o0o ok... well then i guess i see what you mean now. I'll make sure to steer clear of that OS until im more knowledgeable of it.

I really want to build my first PC to run WinXP Pro and Red Hat Linux. The basic spec I think would be good is:

AMD Athlon X2 Dual Core 4800+
2Gb RAM
256Mb NVidia GeForce 7800GTX
500Gb HD Drive/s
CD & DVD Read/Writer

What I am looking for is a suggestions...
Best Motherboard?
Good looking Case
High Quality PSU
Decent Resolution (1600x1200) Flat Screen
Best Hard Drive Configuration (1x 500Mb or 2x 250Mb)
Ethernet & Wireless cards

I mostly do Graphics applications (2D & 3D) and some gaming - CS, Quake, Doom etc
Sorry to break it to ya, there isnt really a "best" -- especially when your task list spreads from gaming to graphics design :) A few points worth mentioning though
