Advice on erasing hard drive for re-sale

I need advice please from savvy folks who actually build their own.
I have two old desktops, at least 8 years old. Want to dump or sell for parts. Huge monitors from the dark ages. Problem: I can't find cords and don't want to reassemble. Is there a way to expose the unit to something that would erase files or clear hard drive? I remember hearing something about taking care around magnets?

Do you think it is safe to sell / give away at a garage sale without cleaning? I really don't remember if there is personal info on these.

Thanks everyone!

DO NOT USE A MAGNET!

This may make the drive stop working all together.

I use this:

Doesn't even need to install. Just run it and select a drive to erase. This won't work if the drives you want to erase are the ones you are running the OS on. Here's another thread with useful programs:

DO NOT use the Zillasoft software on that thread. I tried it and it just gave me spyware.
