Advice on hardware

Hello.
I'm thinking of replacing some of my hardware because some games seem to run not-so-smoothly, but I'm not sure which of my devices that are out of date - and consequently needs to be replaced (or expanded). Could you help?


1GB of DDR RAM

Intel Pentium 4 CPU 2.66 1.99GHz (why are there two different values anyway?)

NVIDIA GeForce FX 5700 256MB

About 300GB Harddisk

Motherboard (what I could glean):
System Name/Board Model - ECS P4S5A/DX+
Chipset - SiS 645DX CPU to PCI Bridge


Should I upgrade (and what?) or should I wait some time and buy a new computer?
 
Well, Looking at the above specs i think that a CPU upgrade would be a good idea and more RAM couldn't hurt if you really want to play the more recent pc games.
 
Mobo, CPU, Gfx. If you're going to primarily be playing games go for an AMD CPU (AMD compatible Mobo obviously) and something like a 6600GT or a 6800GT.
 
um, not really, if u build it yourself, a good budget gaming pc is around $700 while just getting a mobo 100 cpu 170 and gfx 200-250 will give u much better preformance then that budget pc will.
 
Well e.g. Battlefield gives me some problems, just like real time strategy games with a lot of units - Warcraft III, C&C: Generals and the like - can lag when many units are in play. That would be the CPU right?

Am I right to believe that my power supply might cause me trouble if I were to upgrade? Its 300W...
 
the cpu, graphics, and ram all tie together , so if one was fairly old, then it would lag. Any of those would cause it to lag. I would go with an Athlon64 of Sempron, and at least a 6600gt.

Sounds like you have a NorthwoodB 2.66 (133x20) cpu plugged into a 400BUS motherboard (hence 100x20) giving you a lower clock

The quickest solution would be to upgrade the videocard to at least a 9800Pro class videocard .... solutions go all the way to a 6800U deepnding on your budget. Furthermore the motherboard should be upgraded as well when you get a chance .. SiS chipsets arent the best ... in fact, they're pretty crummy
