advice on new computer

i am looking for advice on what i should buy to build my new pc. i havent built one for a while and times have changed drastically. i am wondering if people can recommend a mboard i am looking for one with ide and also sata plus able to hold a large amount of ram. i would like advice on the lastest stuff or almost new as i have to consider my budget which i am working out. so reasonable prices would be good in pound sterling. any help is greatly appreciated

What is your budget for the base unit?

What is the use?
Surfing Web/ Office application? Watching video/listen to music? Gaming/ video editing?

A decent midrange set-up for the base unit would around £400 - 600, depends on your purpose
