Advice on purchase

I am new to laptops and was going to buy one for work. I am a teacher/coach and will use a lot of word processing, powerpoints and probably utilize video a lot. I don't plan on playing any video games on this laptop. The two I am looking at hard are Toshiba Satellite A135-S4527 and the HP Pavilion dv231us. I believe both have Vista as their OS. I have heard good and bad about Vista but also as long as you have 1GB you should be ok. Any advice on these two? Should I stay away from Vista? Any others I should take a look at? Thanks for any input. Looking to stay at $1000 or under.

i dont know much about either laptop, but both brands are good. i favor HP, but thats just me. i suppose it just comes down to specs. as far as vista goes, i like it. you shouldnt be afraid of it, its quite similar to XP in most aspects. for the most part vista is just prettier and somewhat more convenient than XP. and dont worry about programs not working on vista. if its new-ish, itll most likely work.
if you have any questions about comparing said laptops, just post the specs here and we'll be glad to help.

Somebody I know told me that Vista even runs slow with 1 GB RAM. They told me that it took forever to start up. So, I would recommend anything over 1 GB, Unless you want to wait forever.

From what I've seen working in retail around vista computers every day, I'd honestly recommend go with 2GB of ram, you don't need a big hard drive for your use, and I'd suggest either an AMD Turion X2 processor or an Intel Core 2 Duo, they offer the most performance for the power use and heat output. You might also consider a laptop with a slightly smaller screen if you're gonna use it at work and carry it around, something like this
