advice on updating drtiver

Hi, could you tell me the correct way to up date a graphics driver please.
I have two nivida gtx275 in sli. i done it the other night but had a lot of trouble, i ended up having to go into safe mode that done it, but there must be an easy way.
thanks for any help.
 
Typically you just download the driver from the manufacture's website which is normally in the form of a handy executable file that you only have to run in order to install the driver. What method did you use?
 
Thanks for your reply, I uninstall the driver I want to replace then I turn off my avg, but it all went wrong, hence the safe mode start up, do I need to uninstall the old driver first or just leave it. Is it an idea to update by using divce manager and just click the update driver.
