Ok, I am looking to get away from my Latitude D630, but don't need more power. What I am looking at is a Precision M90 to replace it. But I want some things answered first.

Resolution.
-The D630 is 14" with 1440*900 resolution. That makes it 121 DPI.
-The Precision is 17.3" 1920*1200 resolution. that makes it 133 DPI.
Is this going to be noticable in average things? Is the 1200 resolution that much better than the 900 going from a 14 to 17.3?

Processor
-The D630 is C2D @ 1.83GHz
-M90 is C2D @ 2.13 GHz, is this going to limit the battery that much? And for task like opening compressed files, is it going to be noticeably faster?

Graphics
NVS135m vs FX2500m. The FX has 8 more cores and 4x the memory, as well as higher stock clocks. Will this play MOH airborne at better settings than the NVS? I can do everything else I do with the 128mb NVS, but I really want to be able to do that too...

Expansion.
Dell states that it has an expresscard 54mm slot, but the ebay listing is for a PC card slot. Is it safe to assume that it is expresscard?

ok, last thing, will the D series module bay devices work with the M90? Or do I need to get a new HDD bay for this laptop? Or being 17" it may have 2 HDD bays, does anyone know if that is right?

thanks for the help.

ahead of time, I am not getting a newer laptop. I would rather buy a really good old one than a shitty new one.

The M90 has the chassis of an Inspiron/Vostro, so the module drive is different, yes.

Not sure on the Express Card situation. Is it of any importance to you?

not really. I was just wondering if which it was.

being based on the Inspiron, is it going to be as well built as the Latitude I currently have? I would hate to downgrade construction just to upgrade to DVI and 2 more USB ports.

I haven't physically seen them much, but we have M6300's at work (I haven't used or studied them much) but I'll look tomorrow and let you know. I could take pictures too if you want.

no need for the pics. It appears from searching google that the build quality is fairly good.

Does it sound like a good upgrade to you, or would you just keep the D630?

If you need the extra tiny bump in processing power, but the greater graphical power, then I say yes. You wouldn't want to carry it everywhere though as they weigh significantly more than the D630.

the weight does not really bother me that much. my backpack is weighing right at 50Lbs currently, so if I take away the weight of the latitude and probably take the chemistry textbook out then I will still be about the same.

I may be able to keep both, but I don't know. How much better will teh graphics be? I know it has 4 times the memory, the memory bus is also quadrupled, and it has 8 more cores I think. Is this going to be a massive bump in power?

I checked the ratings on PassMark. The 135M in the D630 rated at 123 and the FX 1500M from the M90 rated at 483.

The FX2500 ranks even higher at 534. If you have the money and want to get it, I say get it.
