AGP and Direct X10

DX10 is the newer updated set of 3D rendering drivers found in Vista. That's all it is. Buit to see the full benefit in the newer version of the same the two things needed are the version of Windows it is found in(Vista) and a new model card that is rated compatible to see more the improvements.

But if your card is one of the later model AGP cards you may find Vista drivers for it. Most everything now is directed at PCI-Express models while some companies still manufacture AGP type cards for use on older boards. DX9 even DX8 can be installed onto a Vista machine if a game's installer requires it. DX10 is simply the newer version there.

You will find that Visiontek is the brand seen most widely for DX10 capatible AGP models at this time. newegg sees the largest selection by seeing more then one brand over what is seen at other vendors. TigerDirect is presently only carrying one Visiontek model while mwave.com sees three there.

Originally DX10 should have been a simple update for DX9 and able to be used on older versions of Windows like 9c can be used on 98 still. But you will no longer see 10 and past as a separate download like the past releases requiring you to buy Vista in order to use it. It presently comes already included there.

First of all what does direct x 10 offer that 9 doesnt and do they have agp cards that have dx10?

2600xt and pro
2400pro

both from ati. Direct x 10 compatible. If you have vista though, I would figure you also have pci express? most people with agp are still hangin with the old geezers on win. xp and 2000

I'm hoping that they release a 2900 for agp. Or an 8800 for agp. Since I don't have the money to go pci express, nor desire. So many people with agp, they are slowly phasing out the agp by fewer releases and longer waits in between. But...they can't deny us!!!! LOL

and now with pci-express 2 coming out....all the pci-express people will be in the same boat as the agp people. The pci express video cards are super cheap, and it's definitely very tempting to upgrade...pc gaming is filled with upgrades, it's expensive LOL....consoles ftw!!

yeah it sucks having agp but im cheap and dont have money to get a new motherboard so im stuck using it, thanks for all the help

If you are not any super festered ocing frame rates obsessed enthusiast and simply need a basic model for running a system with Vista those models will work. If you go with a newer 2xxx series AGP card make sure to install the Catalyst 7.10 and not 7.9 since that was loaded with problems.

DX 9c would have most likely have been DX10 if Vista was already out a few years ago. But the long delay made that the last update for XP and previous versions while what could have been DX11 was more feasible to be a Vista exclusive there.

Plus you still won't see the full features in DX10 for the moment until games that require the new Direct X are finally out as far as gaming is concerned. At this time mulrimedia and graphics for the most part in other types of programs. When you do have more to spend on a new build then you can look over the better options.

I have an AGP Radeon x800 Pro and it is certified for windows vista so it can handle direct x 10. I would like to see what direct x 10 has to offer over 9 because some of the screenshots of flight simulator x on windows vista look a whole lot better than what I have seen on windows xp.

vista ready only means youll be able to run vista. your card will struggle severely with dx10 effects in games.

Not always! It just means you lose out on the performance gains seen with 16x over 8x/4x type graphics. You cartainly wouldn't able to see the gains for things like antistropics and antiliasing as well as the faster PCI-E bus. Most current games will still run on AGP cards while being somewhat limited with the higher detail settings.

Even with the latest PCI-E cards out you still won't see DX10 fully implimented but OpenGL extensions used by Vista since the games are still DX9. Multimedia and other forms of graphics like image quality sees the gains presently. The newer AGP models still have to compensate for the improvements with DX10 while losing on 16x over 8x with the better chips available while being limited by the AGP bus. That's where the real problem will be seen.
