Agp and pci

Hello,

first of all Praetor noticed that i have two of the same kind of threads in two different categorys, sorry about this, i just wasn't sure if i had put it in the right column, cause they were to do with the desktop and the graphics card.

anyway, still damn fussed on graphics cards, i think i understand them, and somthing else comes up, ............why is life so hard!!!!! :)

i thought that pci was better than agp, but now i have noticed that some of the best cards are on agp, which one is newer agp or pci, and now i've heard about pci-e,............give me strengh!!!

and i have been told that the 6600gt is a really good card, but theres like a million and one different types of 6600gt!!!

i know that 256mb 6600gt is obviously better than 128mb 6600gt, but then do i get 6600gt agp or 6600gt pci?

do all motherboards have agp slots?

agp is an older technology, and pci-e will eventually phase it out.
At the moment a good proportion of new boards are using pci-e, but some boards - older ones especially are stil using agp.

There are a few boards that have both (i mean a few!)
Only way to tell is to look up your board and see which it has.
 
The 256mb 6600 GT is not that much better, but it is a bit better. It wouldn't really be a noticeable difference. In case you were wondering or didn't know, PCI and PCI-e are entirely different slots. PCI-e runs at 16x while PCI (correct me if I'm wrong) runs at 1x, also AGP runs at 8x.

As for the video card, go with the PCI-e 6600 GT, it runs faster than AGP. But make 100% sure that you do have a PCI-e slot, otherwise you will have to go with AGP.
 
PCI-E runs at 16X and AGP8X. Currently they are both equal when it comes to speed. PCI-E slots on motherboards can be like this 1 or 2 PCI-E for GFX cards and the rest are PCI-E 1X, I'm not sure what PCI slots would then be compared to in terms of multipliers i.e 1X,2X etc.
 
"video card technology" usually lasts how long? i mean let's say i buy a computer with pci-e, will it be outdated in the next 2,3 or 5 years? in that case, it's not a good idea to spend much money a computer because if the video card is outdated, you have to change to a new computer or change the motherboard...
 
ok, so i will get a 256mb pci-e 6600gt, but do you suggest any makes, i know that the popular ones are ati and geforce

it doesn't really matter, just get the cheapest one
