AGP card.

My son's computer is a Pentium IV 3.2Ghz one, running Windows XP, service pack 2 and equipped with ATI Radeon 9600 graphics card and 1GB RAM.

We want to "spicy it up" as soon he will be running "Supreme Commander" on it, which, as I understand it, is a pretty demanding game.

Short of coming up with a new mobo, supporting PCI-E, which would dramatically increase any budget assigned to this, I was thinking of making use of the available AGP slot, purchasing a good AGP graphics card and increasing the RAM to 2GB.

In a 1-year time we will probably have migrated to full new Vista computers for both our household PCs, so this would be a mere, affordable, intermediate upgrade.

Would this board do the trick?

"Gainward Bliss 7800 GS, AGP8x, Retail

GeForce 7800GT, 512MB DDR3, 2xDVI, HDTV-Out, 256Bit, 1.4ns, Golden Sample "Goes-Like-Hell Edition", Chip: 500+MHz / memory: 1.400+GHz"

The current mobo will only support 1.5V AGP cards so I have placed an inquiry to find out if this is a 1.5 or 3.3V one.

Given the intentions and limitations, can you recommend another AGP card?

The 7800GS is a great AGP card, and 2GB will be an added bonus.

But if you're looking for a bit cheaper card, the x800/x850 series is also great, and performs very closely to the 7800GS.

we'll look at those, also. The Gainward has a bunch of features that, for the intended use, may prove to be kind of an overkill...

Any more inputs?

As I'm sure you're aware, the Gainward Bliss isn't a regular 7800GS, but rather based on a 7800GT core. They're also quite expensive, and an X1950Pro might be a better and possibly cheaper choice. Failing that, the X800/X850 series that Omega suggested are still strong cards at a lower price.
 
I have the X850 Pro and I think its an excellent card for AGP, It runs game very well, Highly recomended :D
