I am thinking of buying a graphics card : 9800 pro 128mb
It says 'AGP 8X (0.8v), 4X (1.5V) or Universal AGP 3.0 bus configuration (8X/4X)'
The motherboard I will be getting has : 1 x AGP8X/4X slot , 1.5V
1) Will they run at agp 8x or 4x ?
2) What is the difference

1) I believe it will run at 8X.
2) It is how fast information will traval.

And personally I would go with PCI-e if you have the money to do it.
 
K , but the motherboard will have to support pci-e aswell as the graphics card yeh? Woudl I notice much of a difference?
 
Yes, the motherboard would have to have a PCI-e slot. I dont know if you would see much of a differnce (really depends on what you would be doing with your computer) but if you have a PCI-e slot you would be set up for more hardware coming out in the future. I would say, if not already, they are trying to phase AGP out.
 
to answer you first question, both agp 4x and 8x are compatible with each other, so an 8x card can drop down to 4x with no problems.
the difference between the two is the speed at which data is transmitted from and to the card.

also, if you do decide to go for pci-express there's a big difference in performance simply because the cards are a new generation and that in itself provides benefits.
also, if you decide to change you motherboard and want to go to pci express at a later date keep an eye out for motherboards that support both pci express and agp.

the only thing to note is that all of the newer cards are being released on pci express so there going to be a point where you will be forced to change

8X AGP offers twice the bandwidth approx 2.1GB/s, not that the 9800Pro will utilize it.
 
1) How do you know they will run at 8x . I belive you I just want to know how you knew.
2) How do you know the 9800 pro wont use the bandwidth? What cards would use it?
 
A 1x-2x slot has a notch in the front, a universal slot has no notches they are 1X-2X-4X and a 4x-8x slot has a notch near the rear of the slot

The AGP voltage is the *signaling* (I/O) voltage. The 9800
(9700,9600,9500) is an AGP 3.0 card and uses the 1.5v key and signals at
..8v.
