AIM does require some CPU power to operate, especially when you first open it up or if you're talking to alot of people. How much CPU usage was it using?

about 80%, but i opened task manager, and clicked systm idle process, and clicked and process, and it dropped the CPU usage, have no idea why..

ONE excellent solution is Trillian
It is an all-in-one program that works with most instant messaging systems including AIM. The main reason why it is so much better is because of its tiny CPU usage, and because of its new features. You uninstall AIM, and install Trillian and it will log you in just like AIM did and it will operate just like AIM did.

I'm not sure why AIM takes so much CPU, but I switched to Skype because of this reason. Skype is WAAAY better and it offers instant messaging, calling (with microphones and will also call home phones for free), and video. It also includes conference calls so you can have multiple people in one discussion.
AIM is unnecessarily slow for the tiny job it does and so I would not recommend it. The only problem with Skype is that not enough people know about it. AIM is more of the kid-friendly communication system and so everyone I know still uses it except 3 of my friends who I got to switch and who now love Skype.

trillian rocks and is the way to go

Oh... Pro looks like it would just take even MORE CPU...

There really isn't any way that I've ever heard of to make AIM use less CPU. I think it is just made to use a lot, although I agree that it really shouldn't be using 80%. I don't remember how much it took when I have it, but I can't imagine it was that much... Try re-installing it?

You should definitely try Trillian though. It only takes 5 minutes and it is a lot faster. If you don't like it just uninstall it. You don't need to get rid of AIM to use it, just quit the AIM process.

I think you would like it though :)

EDIT: Does 6.0 use less CPU?
