Alienware Custom Build, or Build Myself

Im gonna be buying a laptop for work, very very soon...

I've been looking pretty hard at Alienware, not sure what model yet though. My only other thought is, do you think it would be worth trying to build one, or just probably frustrating because laptop hardware is more difficult to get.

If you are already unsure about buiding one, then don't do it. Buy it from Alienware. Building is very tricky with laptops, and if it breaks you can't send it back for repair.

EDIT: there are cheaper places to buy quality laptops from

Actually building a laptop is probably easier that a desktop. I can give you plenty of advice if you want any. We sell many from Asus, MSI, Twinhead and ECS. Who ever you buy from, should have some manuals (with pics) to ease the task in building your mobile machine. :D

Alienware is just a boutique shop that tend to sell old product. You're paying a premium for the alien head popping out of the lid... which leads to a thicker unit.

Good Point.

I know, i really like alienware's cases especially. (I realize that is a poor reason to buy them, but their specs are great too)

Are there any other really good companies, that may be less expensive, but still offer really neat casing for laptops?

Well I dont know which one you're looking at, but the popular one 7700 and the MJ12 has been passed around boutique shops like a cheap slut. Don't get me wrong, it's an excellent gaming machine and probably a lot cheaper from Sager. You won't get the added alien head though.

Thanks for the input MatrixEVO,
i'll post another message in this thread if i decide to build one..

You said the name of the other company is Sager?

I'd also look into Asus and MSI, they've got some pretty good styles there. Asus have carbon fiber and brushed aluminum on theirs- a much better build than others.

You can check my profile. There's datasheets on the site too. Also what were you looking for? More for gaming or more style & portability?

see thats the thing i want a nice mix of power and mobility, oh and it has to be 64-bit, cause im not replacing it soon.. im expecting around a $2500-3000 CAD price tag.

I operate it. As for 64-bit, you'll have to look at AMD processors then. Intel won't have any 64-bit Yonahs until mid year. The Sager 9750 should work out good for you.

yea, get turion 64. it'll be the 64-bit low power usage processor of today... performing about as good as its big brother the desktop processor: athlon 64.

basically, pentium M has all the architecture and power usage, and none of the extra features such as hypertransport and 64-bit and dual core (though turion 64 doesnt have dual core yet either...)

and I'd suggest seriously considering anything at all but alienware, my friend has one of their laptops and had a serious pain in the ass with them for over two months trying to get it fixed, everything kept breaking on it and he's by no means computer stupid. First the processor started getting really hot, and by really hot I mean 83 degrees. Shortly thereafter, his motherboard went bad (no question why). So he shipped it in to them and didn't get it back for 7 weeks. He tried it out and the graphics sucked so he ran 3DMark03 and got scores around 1800, clearly a problem. He called them about it and they said that it was normal, stating that all Alienwares meeting some specified scores were fine (supposedly 1800 on 03 was high enough, they never would tell him the cutoff score). They said that since he was "rushing them" they didn't have enough time to do a thorough job, and they also tried blaming it on a hurricane (couldn't figure that one out for the life of me) and this is all after 7 weeks of them having the laptop. A couple days later, the card that controls the lighting of the screen went out (forgot the name, want to say inverter board but not sure). So he called them back to complain about this as well. They said they would have a technician come out and fix the screen, but refused to do anything about the video card. The technician came like 2 weeks later and installed the card, but still no graphics. So he had his mother threaten to sue and all sorts of other stuff and he finally got a new video card in the mail a week or two later. Now it works fine, though it took almost 3 months for that to happen. And btw, they didn't extend his warranty for the time they had it either.

Well if you do a search, you'll find a whole lot of horror stories regarding hardware and support. But yeah, that sounds pretty horrible what happened to your friend, but I have to admit that I've seen similar stories. I never bought from them mainly because of the price, but then the horror stories of support and workmanship kept me away. People think they manufacture their own products, but they're just dressed up units that have been around for a while. Just like VoodooPC, they've got a unit that we carry for $2000 more. The extra $2k is just for the paint job.
