All CD's playing at half-time in my pc- help

I'm not sure if it's NERO's fault- their cd burner software used to be top-notch for me- but after downloading updates from them in the last few months, EVERY CD I put in my pc plays slow.. like at half-time- and NERO also no longer burns CD's. From files, images, or just copying cds- it just stops after 13% done and says "error, burn process failed". One thing I noticed in the error log is it says "disc fixated". I printed out the error log and sent it to NERO tech support last week and havent heard back yet. Are these two issues related? How can I get my CD's to play at normal speed again? ALL audio files in my computer play fine, wavs and mp3's - its just CDS that arent playing right- no matter what player I use (WMP, NERO player, etc). I'm on windows xp with a fairly recent Gateway GT4024 dual-core processor. Is it possible that my burner has gone out?

Someone in another forum suggested that I make sure none of the IDE channels in the Device Manager tab were set to PIO transfer mode. One of the secondary IDE channels was set to PIO, but even though I tried to change this to "DMA if available", it still said the transfer mode was PIO underneath and wouldn't allow me to change it. I have no idea if this is what the problem is because I've never touched these settings.

Thanks for any advice you could give!

well I solved part ofthe problem.. I did some more research and deleted the secondary channel that had PIO selected, then rebooted and windows automatically installed it again with DMA selected. So now my CD's play correctly but I still get write errors and resets occuring mid-burn, so I can't burn any CD's.
