Hey,

So i have recently been the target of this weird problem. All my music playing programs freezes when i try to play a music file ( they are working fine untill i press play ). It happens in WMP,winamp and even VLC. Does anyone have any ideas on what might be going on ?

Thanks :)

Edit:

It is not a problem with one codec, since i have tested video play back and got no picture but audio, this is really weird, help!!!

Sound drivers for the onboard or expansion card are usually the problem unless you run a visulization ilke seen with WMP when playing back an audio file. on occasion a video driver can hang up. Sound drivers needing an update would be the first thought there however especially since you are seeing this with various players.

what are your specs?

my older computer used to do it-was the media vizulisation that my graphics couldnt handle..

if its an old computer with old graphics and your trying to play the visuals it can struggle, try updating your graphics drivers and sound like pc eye says if thats no good chances are its something to do with your hardware!

if its a new computer i have not a clue after drivers have been updated

When going to install drivers for sound on the new build here XP was fun at first. The Creative installer automatically downloaded Vista drivers onto XP. Later the same at the MS update site. Then the July 2007 update at their support when selecting XP as the OS was still for Vista.

If you recently updated and are now seeing problems then you may want to take a close look at the release notes. Here those saw problems with games as well as multimedia until corrected. If a real old system there a 64mb video card would run into problems with the visualizations as well as many older 1128mb models seeing outdated drivers.

Still no change!!! :(

Okey so i have reinstalled codecs = no change, reinstalled drivers = no change and i have also made sure with msconfig that i didnt shut of some important process for audio. Now what is funny is that audio works flawlessly in games.

For the specs of my computer im running XP sp2, 2GB RAM, Core 2 Quad 2.40GHz and a NVIDIA Geforce 8800GTS, other specs are probably not important, oh and the audio card is inbuilt in the ASUS P5KC motherboard.

Please help im craving my music! :( :(

Onboard! I usually avoid that for gaming and especially multimedia. Some problems have been seen with Realtek being used for the onboard while I suspect something else is up there.

The improvement seen with the audio in games does show you are now onto something and only have one thing left to solve. I doubt the hardwares won't be able to handle the visualization seen in media players while suspecting the driver set for the video card as a possible cause for still seeing problems with the media players unless you have some type of resource conflict inplay there.

Generally any problems with video drivers would show up in the games first if not with the desktop right off. Something running in the background seems more likely since the msconfig also sees the services as well as startup group when going to disable any firewall or antivirus program. If you decide to look in there make sure to place a check mark in the "hide all microsoft services" box or risk disabling soemthing you do need.
