ALL USB ports stop working at random

Ok, my system has been fine, now all of a sudden all my USB ports stop working (usually when I'm playing a game) It doesn't matter what game. Sometimes they die right away, sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes hours. I haven't changed any settings, the only thing I can think of is an update screwed it up.
I'm running Vista Ultimate with all current updates. I have tried every USB setting in the BIOS (there aren't many). I have tried using all rear ports, all front ports, some of each.

Revert back to a previous driver, or see if there is a newer driver from the motherboard manufacturers website.
 
thanks for the help. it was actally the controller. there was a short in the wire. everytime it shorted all the usb's turned off. i put a new wire on it and all is good. thanks again
