Am I getting scammed?

Probably I'm paranoid here, but I thought I'd check anyway.

In the last few days whenever I connected to my hotmail account it told me something like that Microsoft wanted to make sure I can recover my account if something goes south and so I needed to give them and email address to which they would send a security code which I could use to access may account if something goes wrong (I guess if someone steals my password or something), but the thing that has me suspicious, and maybe this is just my ignorance, is that I never get this message when I access my account from the university library.

I gave them an email address to send an email to and now they want me to click on a link and they say "Please do this right away because the link in the email will expire soon."

Am I being silly here?

The email came from [email protected], and this prompt to get this code came from account.live.com, so everything seems to be right. I must be paranoid, right?

Contact MS support via their web contact details and ask them. Do not reply to the email in anyway until you confirm it.

Google [email protected] and see what pops up, you will be amazed.

I'm completely confused now, becuase I've read that Microsoft IS indeed introducing this security code thing, and the way I got an email from that address is that I logged onto hotmail (or outlook as it is now known) and was told they are introducing this security code and that I should provide another email address where this code will be sent.

Now, this is all AFTER I've already given my password through the typical log in form on outlook.

So I gave my other email address and then I got this thing, asking me to follow a link. I clicked on the link, and it led me to outlook where it said "For security purposes, please enter the Microsoft account for which you're replacing the security info." and I did, but it told me the session had expired. Now this is probably because I only followed the link in the email very late, because I was reluctant to, and it said the link expires quickly and that I should follow it quickly.

Here's the Microsoft web page that talks about this security code:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/two-step-verification-faq

And here's a guy on the Microsoft forums who's getting the same thing and he's told by a moderator that it's fine:

Yeah you're paranoid. It is Microsoft's security feature. The session expired so now you need to do ti again, plain and simple.
