Am I wise to keep resisting?

I've got two laptops running Windows 7, and both keep pestering me to "upgrade" to Windows 10...

So far, I have continued to ignore it as I am a very cautious person (plus I hate change!) and don't want to do something I will regret.

Basically, it ain't broke so why should I fix it?

Maybe I'm being stupid, but I do know people who are more computer minded than me and they are also refusing to upgrade, so maybe there are good reasons to stick with 7 for now.

If I were running Windows 8 though, I can tell you now I would have upgraded ASAP!! Anything is better than that pile of crap.

We are microsoft, lower your defenses and surrender your computer. We will add your technological distinctiveness to our own. Your personal information will be adapted to serve us. Resistance is futile. :D

But seriously, I too am a strong believer in 'if ain't broken don't fix it'.
If theres a good reason I would upgrade, like if there were new features or programs you wanted. If support has stopped for your current OS then upgrading understandably would be a good idea. If you develop a problem with your current OS and need to do a new install, you could maybe take the opportunity to check out a new OS.

That privacy argument is no longer true, both 7 and 8.1 have received updates that basically allows Microsoft to do the same thing they have done on 10. I have read though that they aim to restrain what kind of information they will gather as many users are complaining about this. Win 7 and 8.1 are both awesome OSes (in fact I use both and 8.1 is a little better than 7 on the performance side) so if I were you I'll wait until the last month of free upgrade to make my decision. In fact, that's what I will do. I still have doubt I'll upgrade, bought 8.1 pro and it has been my favorite OS since XP which lasted 7-8 years on my first computer...

Windows XP sure was a great OS, although in my personal opinion 2000 was the best.

When is the free upgrade period coming to an end, do we know?

Exactly its futile, the updates screw you no matter what you have.
No matter the legality, many companies acquire data they ain't supposed to have 'accidentally' if by magic and even if you trust data to them, they will only lose it anyway.

I believe it was for 1 year after release...

So, what was the official date of release?

I'm running 7 on all PCs at home, but probably will move to 10 near the end of the free-upgrade (in hopes of any major bugs being found and fixed).

you have one year from the official release date of july 29 2015.ive already done 4 updates and have had no problems, but still recommend the update is done by someone who is computer savvy.

Well, maybe I'll think about it next year. I didn't realise it was free forever, I thought it was only free for 1 year then you had to pay? Obviously I got the wrong end of the stick!

It's not free forever, It's only free up to July 29th 2016 and then you have to pay for it if you install it after that.

Yes you should update. It is much faster than Win 7 in general terms from my experience. You can upgrade, download the Win10 ISO, dual boot a fresh install of Win 10 and then downgrade back to 7 on the original partiion. Best of both worlds. I have Win 7, 8.1 and 10 in seperate partitions as a back up and in case I need legacy support etc.
