AM2 and AM2+

Are the AM2+ processors compatible with the AM2 mobos? I have a dual core AMD at 2.6GHz and I was wondering if I could get a quad core without getting a new mobo.

Depends on the model of motherboard and what Quad. Some have no bios update, some have a update for limited models of Phenom.

google is your friend. i googled am2+ and clicked im feeling lucky. guess what came up first ;)

so the answer is: yes your am2 socket is compatible with am2+ processors, but the hypertransport will be limited to your motherboards maximum frequency. not that it matters, hypertransport doesn't limit anything.. ever.

Thats not the best source. Maybe in a perfect world. Alot of AM2 boards never got a Phenom update. Some are very limited on what Phenoms it can run. And alot that claim they can are buggie at best. Plus you lose more the the HT speed, you lose split power plane, lose support for DDR2 1066 and alot of bios features are missing.

Hm, well I'm stuck with my clock speed since my BIOS is disabled. The only thing I could get is a Athlon 64 x2 6400+. Which I don't think is that much of an upgrade for the money.

You could give HP a call or email and see if it will support the Phenom or certain models. The latest bios update I could find was about blue screen when coming out of hibernate mode. But alot of times they add things that are not listed. If it does, its only a 3 phase power design so I dont think it would run the top 125 watt models.

Yeah that's what I've been hearing. And haha, I remember that update. After coming out of sleep mode the computer would say the hard drive is missing and go BSOD. I got it like 5 times before the update came out.
