AM2 hsf compatible with AM3?

i just got a cpu cooling fan for a present from a friend that is visiting me and it is AM2 but my motherboard is and AM3 and the black cross that i am meant to place under the motherboard is not the right size for AM3 is there any way to make the heatsink compatible?

Dont know. The mounting bracket and holes on AM2/AM2+ and AM3 are all the same.

my motherboard is a ASRock 870 extreme3 heat sink is a AVC global star

it cannot connect with my motherboard
(not a clip on) with the below motherboard mount doesn't fit

From what it looks and sounds like. You just have the mounting bracket for socket 775/1366. Contact AVC and see what they say about mounting it on a AMD board.

i did and the retailer they say its not compatible with am3 with am2 there is something i can place under the Mobo and remove mobo braket with this in place. but my friend said dealer said it was. im sending it back to see if they have something they can give me to make it compatible like a braket or something.
