AMD 64 x2 3800 isn't what I hoped for ...

New to the threads , need a lil help ...

Well i built a new system right and I wanted it mostly to multitask. I put media center on it cause I want it for watching tv and music and dvd's and such. Here te specs on my system :

AMD 64 X2 +3800
2 gig ram
120 master hdd
320 slave hdd
ati x1300 pci-e
samsung dvd rw w/ lightscribe

Now the problem is I was buring a cd and just and I went to the taskmanager and I was running 100% cpu usage. When I got the cpu for almost $300 ... hoping it would do what I paid for. What can I do to perhaps overclock or perhaps run a program to get better performance out of my cpu. I don't know much about overclocking, basically know the basics pc's ...so perhaps laymans terms... I'd appreciate it.

what sort of mobo are you using?

also, X2 3800's are fine at doing that stuff, so i highly doubt thats the problem. Try downloading the drivers for everyrthinng again......

asus A8V-E SE

and what drivers spacifically?

You might have to update your BIOS to support dual core, although even a single core processor shouldn't be struggling with CD burning. Go to the aplications tab in the task manager and see what program/process is utilizing all those resources. Although if your getting good performance I wouldn't worry too much about it...

i was dvd burning i believe .. if it doenst make a huge difference ... uhm .. i think i was running msn , aim , fire fox and maybe guildwars ...

where can i update the bios at ?

i'd say you shouldnt update the BIOS unless you really have 2, you could really screw your system up, but i could be wrong.

did you need to convert a video file to dvd format? burning a dvd only uses like 5% tops of my old single core 3400+... and probably 0-3% of my x2 3800+ at 2.4ghz (my normal clocks, its stable at 2.6ghz though)
but converting is different than burning.
ctrl+alt+delete and check for background processes. go to the processes tab and sort by CPU usage. then, check back with us and tell us what process is using the cpu so much.
100% cpu usage isn't a bad thing, that just means its using both cores. some processes aren't limited... like games may have no need for both cores because they only need to go at 60fps or something like that (vsync) whereas dvd burning (or video conversion) can finish in two minutes or two hours depending on cpu speed and amount of cores. 100% cpu usage on a dual core will take the dual core half the time to complete than a single core at 100% cpu usage... i mean if they have the same frequency and core

if it is at 100% that would be oen core by itself the tow cores never worck on one thing they each do one hread at once so u basicaly have 2 3800 in ur comp so u could use one for say ur dvd burning and have it at 100% and have the other one at 85% while ur playing a game they are each individual cores put in to ur computer to worck liek 2 cpus thats it

well i understand the dual core , im just saying when I'm doing this , my pc is on the verge of almost freezing, running extremely slow. When I'm lookning at the task manager, how can i see what usage each core is runing ? cause it just displays 100% thats all. It's like im just running the same old system you get from a walmart when I was burning the dvd .. and yes it was just burning.

I'll get a screen shot of the task maneger in the morning cause im on my laptop right now cause im on duty.

u said u were running fire fox msn and guild wars before at the same time as the burn so guild wars will take up some usage and so will msn if it is the new windows live bet a wich is horible by the way uses to much ram i say but it is a multitaskign chip but u cant pile mountain loads of stuff on try burning a dvd by itself and if its still at 100% then maybe u got one of the bad ones that got thru another thing u can do is go into ur task manager and look at prosseses it will tellu whatis going o nand hopw much prossesing is going on to a third thing would be how many icons do u have in ur starter bar if mine has anything over 6 im running at 100% so i usually have my video card anti virus ex i dont count cound and stuf but ex if u have lime wire on but not open as a window that will slow ur cpu as well so keep all the things that actually are tasks like lime wire msn and anything else that would use ur cpu out of ru starter bar until u ned to use it

i still say, go onto www.asustek.com and get some mobo drivers-

and also, what temp. is the CPU at- it could be that underload your CPU is overheating- if its v. hot, make sure you put it on correctly, then out on some new themal paste...

AJ.-

I am not sure on the temp of the cpu. I'm ordering a fan controller/temp soon (im about to move so and i really dont want to pay for expressmail ...) I have 3 case fans plus a decent cpu fan/heatsink. I had it pt on at the factory (purchased it from a website) and they installed the fan and updated the bios I believe. I will try updating the bios cause i think this mobo was mostly designed to run the reagular 64 bit processor so maybe it just doesn't know what to do witha dual core cpu.

Hmm

Do you have Windows XP SP2? Do you have the AMD patch installed? Do you have the Microsoft dual-core patch installed? Do you see two cores in task manager when you press CTRL+ALT+DEL :)?

Well try to answer these to make us solve the problem easier.

yeh but for almost $300 ... it should be much faster
When it's at 100%, are you able to open up other applications quickly, or does it take a while to load?

And as Jan said, do you see two CPU graphs in task manager?
