AMD 810 v Intel i7 processor

Hey guys,

I've decided to upgrade my current computer (which has an am2 phenom II 810 (2.6ghz) processor).

Was just wondering two things, first will an i7 be able to run windows XP games etc on windows 7? (The amd i have atm can run them but i know some intel chips can't)

And the other thing is, if i buy say a $400 Intel Core i7-2600 1155pin Boxed CPU Will it outperform my am2 significantly? I'm talking gaming as well as data processing and also 3d modeling (i know that's more GPU based)

Was also wondering what pin configuration is for desktop (on the newest intel compatible motherboards) am assuming it's 1155 pin?

Thanks in advance =)

Well first of all, I don't know what you mean about this some AMD chips running programs and Intel chips not. If the CPU is powerful enough to run, it will run it. At least to my knowledge there are no compatibility issues there. Windows 7 will play pretty much any game design with XP in mind, and does an ok job of running older programs in compatibility mode. Again though, any issues that arise there have nothing to do with the CPU, but rather the OS.

The i7 is a good deal faster than your 810, but the amount of difference you notice will differ depending on CPU heavy the tasks are. Games for example, benefit more from a powerful graphics card than a fast CPU, but number crunching will see a large boost.

Finally, yes, the newest socket type for Intel is the LGA-1155. Before that it was 1156 and 1366.

Ah ok thanks for the info, there is definitely compatibility issues with running programs in xp with win 7 and some Intel chipsets... ill try find the old info I had on that, ill get the i7, am planning a new pc so Yeh graphic card will come... current pc runs everything perfect but idk, bored of it

Intel chips sets or Intel processors? Again, I've never even heard of incompatibility issues with a processor, but if it's a driver issue then I could see that. I'm not trying to contradict you for the fun of it lol, I've just never heard of such a thing.

If your current computer runs everything fine why upgrade? Just save your money for a system in the future or something else. It is a waste to upgrade a computer if there is no reason for it. Computer technology is always getting better and in a few years you will likely wonder why you wasted your money on a system you did not really even want in my opinion.

Overclock your current 810 for increased performance.

Yeh this is true, i had it overclocked a while ago and it was running at about 1ghz more than standard clocks... the only problem was how difficult the overclock was, took me hours and hours and a heap of guides, then it crashed at some stage, the CMOS reset and i lost the overclock settings...

There's a huge amount of options i had to select from and some of the options are called different things in my BIOS than other people have, and yeh, just too complicated to try get it back to how it was again hehe

Set the bus clock to 250.

Set the CPU north bridge speed to 2500

Set the Hyper transport speed to 2000

Manually set the Vcore (cpu voltage) to 1.35v.

set the ram clocks to whatever gives you your rated speed (or closest to it, and also remember ram is DDR)

Set the ram to proper voltage (should say on the ram itself)

That will take you from 2.6ghz to 3.25ghz, a pretty nice boost without much headache.
