Hi all!

I was thinking of upgrading my PC and I was wondering how big the difference in performance would be between AMD Athlon XP 2500+ (my current processor) and Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (the one I'm thinking of buying).

What exactly is this 'duo' technology, will it give a noticeable difference in performance?

Thanks for the help! :)

The difference would be insanely huge. Period. End of story. It would be like going from a 1989 Honda Accord to a 2007 Shelby Cobra.

No offense, but is that seriously a question? sry lol... Bobo is right, its like comparing a 50's 5 inch TV to a modern 100in TFT LCD with 8ms response time. No argument.

The difference would be massive. The E6600 would blow your old processor out of the water, to say the least.
Duo processors means it has two cores.

Lol. Ok, I get the picture, many thanks! The only reason I asked was that the site I was looking at said the Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 was 2.4Ghz which got me thinking it would seem a bit slow. Guess not!

You're trying to compare two totally different generations of processors. As other's said, there is no comparison.

As for the duo, that's intel's name for duel core. Not too many applications actually utilize this yet, but it does help out with some things. You can also divide up the loads between the cores. Now, this doesn't give you twice the speed of a single core. Actually, with many applications, single cores are faster, unless the software utilzes both cores as I mentioned.

Edit - Ah, and I'm a bit slow ;P
With your last comment about the speeds, look at other processors speeds. The efficientcy of processors has gone up a good bit, so many more operations can be done per clock. So, that's why 2.4GHz processors can beat 3.8GHz processors ;)

Nope, ghz does not have anything to do with speed.

Clock speed means almost nothing nowadays. A 1.8GHz Core 2 Duo would kick the crap out of a 3.6GHz P4. Processors are doing more things per clock cycles at a lower speed, not less things faster.

Let's just say the Core 2 Duo is Godzilla, and the AMD is the tiny civilian who can't run fast enough...

Another one

The e6600 would go to the bathroom for a number 2,and use the AMD Athlon XP 2500+ as toilet paper.

ahahaha, that's a good one...i'm gonna signature quote that one :D

But anyhow, no comparisions. But you'll basically have to buy a brand new system if you want to upgrade.
