AMD and GeForce 6800 Problem

So my brother's computer keeps getting the BSoD after I put in my old GeForce 6800 into it. After looking online, it seems the problem is there is a compatibility issue with the AMD 64 processors and the GeForce 6 series. I found a fix for it online but unfortunately I can't do it. The solution is to goto the control panel->system -> advanced ->recovery and start up and edit the manual startup options by pressing the Edit button. This is available on my computer and my laptop which are both XP but his computer, which has Vista, doesn't show the Edit button in the Start up and Recovery menu. Any help?

You probably need at this time a Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html and the reminder to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/off-topic-chat/announcements.html

Vista is a whole new ball game there with Programs and Features and no option for removing Windows components seen any longer. The main problem there is the lack of Vista drivers for an older AGP card like that model. ATI is the same seeing the support for the Radeon 9xxx series models discontinued. Your brother needs a newer card to see drivers available for the new version of Windows there.

Thanks for the replyand the welcome. I should have stated this in the OP but the graphics card is a PCI-e card, not an AGP.

It is ... 256MB PCI Express™ x16 (DVI/VGA/TV-out) nVidia GeForce 6800

Even with an older PCI-E model if it was an older model when Vista came out you have to look to see if any Vista version of a driver set is available. Usually NVidia carries drivers longer at their main driver site then ATI does with it's own older Catalysts. Using the series of cards/OS selector at nvidia.com there are Vista drivers for the GeForce 6, 7, 8 lineup of cards found at http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvista_x86_162.22.html

The main selector page for choosing the type of device, series, and version of Windows is seen at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

Yeah I've updated the Vista drivers to the most recent one and have tried previous versions as well and none have worked. I'm pretty sure editing the manual startup option will work but I can't do it since it won't allow me to edit it like it does on XP. I may just have to install XP on his computer.

The ione thing I can say about ATI is that they were well ahead of NVidia having drivers available ladt fall when the beta versions of Vista RC1 and RC2 came out. People squawked about not seeing drivers for NVidia driven cards in february even after Vista came out.

With new ATI and Creative cards on the new build there was a few problems with just one old game there. Soon enough however Vista will see it's own SP1 released as the beta version is being tested at this time along with SP3 for XP. Then there will probably be an SP2 for Vista that will clean up what SP1 misses.

You can find XP Home or Pro editions OEM for system builders cheaper now if you shop around. That would see XP on the system there to replace Vista for the time being until it gets fixed by SPs later. Your fastest option is to simply see a newer card go in and solve the immediate driver problems. The prices on DX10 cards are not always as high as still seen on 7950s and Radeon X1950s series cards.
