Since I flipped back a few pages and could not find a topic named closely to this one, I decided it wouldn't hurt to post my question. So if I've missed something big, feel free to flame me, just send me the link to what I missed
Anyways, I currently have a 1.5 ghz machine, but I want to upgrade the processor. I want a computer that can play Half-life 2 and Doom 3 decently, and my 1.5 ghz processor is ok for that, but I want a smooth FPS while playing the game at 1024x768 with all the details up (that's how I have it set right now, but the game can get annoyingly low in FPS sometimes). My question is, should I get a P4 2.8 ghz processor, or an AMD Athlon 3000+? I've heard that AMD's processors are made for gaming, but I wanted to make sure that the 3000+ is better than the 2.8 for that purpose.
And, if you have to know, I have a little over 700 megabytes of RAM and a Radeon 9800 Pro video card.
P.S. With my HP 7955, it is impossible to upgrade the processor to either 2.8 ghz or Athlon 3000+ (trust me, I've done research), but I am going to get a new motherboard and processor and put them with my RAM and video card and hard drives into a new case. The question is, should it be an intel motherboard/processor combo or an AMD motherboard/processor combo?
