I was looking at a AMD ATHLON 64 3500 2.2GHz 939 512KB CPU on ebay for £139.99. i asked if it came with fan and heatsink I was told then it is a OEM version what the hell is that?

what the difference in the 3?
they're just slight variations on the achitecture. They all run at the same core frequecy but the newcastles are built on the 130nm core and San Diego and venice are built on 90nm, so in theory they run cooler and with less power consumption.
The San Diego also has a large L2 cache than the others.
Also venice and san diego offer higher overclocking potential

what the difference in the 3?
  • Newcastle = 130nm process, no SSE3, baseline memory controller, DH7CG
  • Venice = 90nm process, 512K L2, 2nd revision of the baseline memory controller, E3 chip
  • San Diego = 90nm process, 1024K L2 on all but one chip, 2nd revision of baseline memory controller, E4 chip

The San Diego also has a large L2 cache than the others.
Hehe always count in me to keep you on yer toes ... the San Diego 3500+ [ADA3500DAA4BN] has 512K L2 like the others :P (that is, of course, prolly the only exception heehee) I do suspect that this San Diego is an OEM only chip
