I just got a new hp desktop with a +3800... to keep it short i really like the pc so far but when i checked the system info it said the the cpu was running @ 978 mhz shouldn't it run a lil higer that that? like 2.4 ghz? (new egg specs)
Is this normal or is there some adjusting i need to do??

978mhz is a little low. you're completely right, unless its and Athlon 64 X2 but even then it should be running at 2.0ghz (like mine at default settings)
http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
use "cpu-z" to find out what the correct frequency is.
its in the upper left hand corner of the site i just linked you to.
if it still says 978 or anything lower than what it should be, then come back to this thread and we'll figure something out.

if it were a laptop i'd say thats normal, to save power, but desktop's aren't supposed to automatically overclock ever...

Most likely AMD's Cool'n'Quiet is enabled. Basically what that does is it lowers the clock speeds when your not using them, to reduce heat, and lower the fan speeds. If you want to change it, go into your BIOS by pressing F2 or DEL when you turn it on, and look for an option to disable it.

With the cool and quiet technology is the cpu going to step up when i need it?

Well while cpuz was running i open a video and it hopped up 2 1.7ghz so i guess i answered my own question

Omega any downsides to cool and quiet technology?

wow never seen that before.. that'll probably make the chip last alot longer, but personally i prefer having it at top speed all the time..
no real downsides to cool 'n quiet that i can think of though.

Sounds like you have stumbled upon the "cool and quiet" tech. Since we tend to compare computers to cars. Look at it as owning a Corvette Z06 (or your favorite auto) Lots of horsepower under the hood, but only used when needed.

I find Cool and quiet annoying, for exemple in medium running games, the 1 Ghz that it run with it on is two low for the game, but when it boost to normal speed (2ghz), and seems to go back down again, then back up. So the game I was playing was slow, then too fast, then slow again. I just keep cool and quiet tec off.

the hp's always say 9xx for the clock rate when you right click my computer, and im pretty sure that they're refering the the fsb??

i may be wrong but thats what ive noticed

cool n quite doesnt effect the clock speed on my system so i dont understand how it could be that
