The Core 2 equivalent would probably be the E2180 or the E4400.

The 4400+ is a very strong processor, and it does score a 5.0 in Windows Vista. It would be a massive upgrade from your Sempron 2800+.

It would be quite abit difference then your Sempron, but I dont know about the 8600. Go for something like the 3850.

I agree, get the HD3850 it performs better than any 8600 card for almost the same price.
