AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core

Geez... i was looking through newegg.com, and saw an ad for an amd dual core processor! the price of the 4800+ model seems to be similar to that of the current FX55 (only a guess at converting to AUD), but i'm interested to know what you people think of it... If i was planning to buy an FX55, should i get that or a high-end athlon64 x2??

i've read in other posts that a high L2 cache can effectively slow the processor down... the new dual cores from amd have up to 2Gb (1Gb + 1Gb). Will that mean that they are a bit "slow"??

It all depends on what you need. Are you going to be doing just one program at a time, or are there times that you'll have two or more running? I would personally go with the X2, because it will be a little more responsive. btw, the cache is 2MB, not 2GB.

as for my opinion it really all hinges on what you're going to be using the machine for. the FX55s are for high end gaming rigs and are still a waste of cash for that. The dual X2 are good and have a good boost in a multi thread environment. if budget was no option i would go with the X2 4800+ toledo core more than enough for gaming and my work. But then i dont have that much money :(

yeh, it is for gaming... and probly a bit of multitasking (i hate my computer when its burning cds/dvds because it cannot do ANYTHING else...)

essentially i want to get a deliberately over the top gaming computer... so would an FX55 or athlon64 x2 4800+ be better?

and my bad about the Gb cache!! but even with 2Mb, will that effectively slow it down, or lower its performance? i had a look at the CPU101 post from praetor, that said that it wont be too noticable in AMD processors...
 
Yeah

The X2 is considerably better when you consider MULTITASKING (Running many different tasks at once). The FX55 is a better performer I would suppose when it comes to pure GAMING and other single tasks. If I were you I would have a look here and see what the performance of the Athlon X2 4800+ is.

In most of today games the athlon fx-55 most likly will be the better performer. I not so certain about future games like UT:2007. That because games like that going to be made mutithreaded. This I would think gives a advantage to the dual core cpu because it can handle 2 threads at the same time.
