AMD Athlon II "boxed" - contents of the package?

Going to build my own computer in a few weeks. Wonder if I have to buy a heatsink, a fan and thermal paste myself or is this included?

I ask because I came across an article (from two years ago) where the author stated that the only difference between "tray" and "box" will be the package and instructions. (and warranty)

Thanks!

A box set will include the cpu, heatsink/coolingfan, instructions, and warranty. The thermal paste will be in the form of a pad already attached to the heatsink. An OEM processor will only have the cpu and nothing else.

Boxed is another way for saying retail. A retail CPU will include the heatsink with pre-applied thermal paste, the booklet, and of course the box. Retail CPU's carry the full warranty. A cpu ''OEM style'' is the CPU only, and usually only a 30 day warranty from the retailer itself.

Still, you rarely get dodgy CPU's, and if you do, chances are it won't work at all first time you try and use it or stress it.

I just checked different cpu's at newegg and its weird how the warranty is different for different cpu's.

Neweggs Boo Boo. AMD dropped the warranty for OEMs along time ago. None. They use to have 1 year. But now the only warranty for a OEM processor is from who ever you bought it from. usually 30 to 90 days.

Intel has none on OEM either.

Ahh, I was right after all LOL. I pretty much only buy retail, my CPU's see way to much abuse not to have a warranty :D

Why is there hardly a warranty on oem's? Is it because no heatsink/fan was sold with it? Newegg better get on the ball or they might have a lawsuit on their hands if someone complains after buying an oem processor.

I think I got extremely lucky with mine. Before I bought it from OcUK I emailed them to confirm the warranty of it. They sent me an email stating that the OEM processor has the same warranty as retail, however it doesn't come with the box or fan, you just get the chip, so I have the same warranty as a retail ship. If it dies with in 3 years, I have them over a barrel because of that 1 email where they stated to me that it has full normal warranty under them :P:D

The reasoning behind them dropping the warranty, I don't know.

The only thing I can think of is that most OEM processors will be going into prebuilt systems, as they are cheaper to get because of lack of HSF and packaging, along with a POS heatsink. Because of that, most system builders cut corners, so the systems are put together with crap components and cooling, so the chances of a problem occuring are much higher.

However, how true that is, I am not sure, as most warranties are void if the component is damaged due to another component failure, and you lose warranty if it isn't an AMD recomended heatsink too. I am clutching at straws tbh, the reasoning behind not offering the same warranty, other than to save some money, isn't obvious to me

Probably because they have no control where or how the OEM was/came from or treated before you bought it. Like if Emachine bought 5000 X2 250, used 4000. Decided to use X2 260 in the next model and sells the 1000 left over X2 250. AMD probably looks at it like the waranty was with Emachine, not who they sold them too.
