AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4600+ Processor w/ HyperTransport and Dual Core Technology

X2? How good is this compared to Regular AMD 64 Chips and FX Chips?

They are one of the best dual-core cpu;s currently out. It's basically two Athlon 64's in one.

The FX series are both single and dual-core, and are exactly the same as either the A64 or X2, except it has a higher clockspeed and have an unlocked multiplier.

I know two people at this end with different opinions entirely on X2 model cpus. One bought a 3800+ for the new case when an old board was smoked by a bad cpu taken from another case. He loves the performance on that model alone. The other states having no trust on dual cored cpus altogether. One link you can look over should be familiar to OMEGA on choosing cpus. http://www.computerforum.com/showthread.php?t=13239

Personally I looked at the 4800+ X2 some time back before taking more notice of the Opteron line of dual cored models there. But you are going to see some good price drops on the X2 models when Intel comes out with their new Conroe model later this month. http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=2800

So that processor is badass? :-)

I was looking for an awesome processor. Guess I found it!

the 4600+ is an excellent CPU. it depends on what you're doing though... if you just want to do minor gaming then a single core is advised... but say you want to be able to play quake 4... or edit videos all the time... those are operations that a dual core would optimize.

so in short... what do you plan to do with it? dual core is definitely suggested rather than single... of course, its more expensive and will probably drop in price a lot late this month...

I am a pretty big gamer. City of Villains, World of Warcraft, Half-Life 2, Warcraft 3. That's about all I play. Not even Half-Life 2 actually. I bought it and played it at first but haven't in a while. haha

But I am sure I will be buying games in the future. haha

well... do you play games and only play games? if you want to have a lot of background processes then the dual core may be better... personally i like simultaneously listening to music and playing games all at the same time.... and with the dual core i don't even have to mess around with process priorities.

the dual core is the most future-proof. for a budget pc i'd say get a single core and 1gb of memory... a more future-proof pc id get dual core and 2gb of memory (like mine :D)

I am going with a dual core processor.

AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 4600+ Processor w/ HyperTransport and Dual Core Technology Thats the processor i'm going with. Along with 2gb of DDR2 PC6400 SDRAM and a 256mb 16x PCI Express 7900GT!

HL2 has been cranked up on the Socket A board with the Atholon XP3200+ single cored 32bit cpu here as well as other games. But a pair of 1gb DDR400 dimms has given that an edge. For multitasking and other things like running multiple larger not small apps the dual cored cpu is supposed to be the answer for the most part. The 4200+ X2 is advised for a gaming rig probably due to more to it's OC capability while still seeing performance when on a tighter budget. The 4600+ and others would see a higher clock speed default. :D

Sounds good.

You could wait a little and see if prices drop, even for big companies selling AMD products. The prices could be changed.

If the price drops far enough maybe I'll make a quick grab on an FX60 dual core over the 3500+ ordered as a replacement.
