Amd equivalent cpus etc

I've been out of the game for 5 years and way back when I assembled my x58 system I think phenoms were the amd equivalent. I am trying to learn what's changed since then ( probably a lot ) and bring my knowledge back to the present. So two questions I've been researching but can't find answers to.

One what are the amd equivalents to 5th and new 6th skylake cpus and what are their sockets? Is it am3+ and fm2? And are they worth having in gaming builds ?

Also I've read that you can now install sSD devices into your pci express slots wow! And I've noticed the gb to £ ratio is so much better now. What are the sSD devices you would recommend?

AMD has no equivalent to Skylake yet. AM3+ is still a good choice for a budget build, but isn't worth getting for the long haul!

I'd recommend the Samsung Evo 840/850 series that's SATA based.

As C4C said, AMD has no performance equivalent to Skylake at the moment. If you are looking for a mid-range of high-end build, definitely go Intel.

You can get PCI-E and M.2 PCI-E based SSDs, and they perform extremely well, but usually are overkill and cost quite a bit more than a SATA based SSD. I'd get a Samsung 850 EVO in the capacity that you want.

AM3+ has been pretty stale since around 2012 when the Vishera revision was released for the FX line (8320, 6300, etc). Since then there haven't been any significant additions to the lineup. Multithreaded performance on the 8 core is 'okay' although single core performance is noticeably lower compared to newer Intel offerings.

FM2+ on the APU side only offer dual module (4 thread) solutions with integrated graphics on the die.

990FX is the best AMD platform but it's starting to get old. I like my 8350 but I know the 6700k beats it in every way
